Applied landfill information analysis system (ALIAS): development of a relational database system used to analyze the effects of landfill operational and performance characteristics

ALIAS is a web–based relational database application that links analytical chemistry data for environmental samples to the physical attributes of Waste Management’s solid waste landfill facilities located throughout North America.

ALIAS provides a unique linkage of design characteristics, operational practices, and climatic data to analytical data through a query platform that analyzes the effects of specific operations on leachate, landfill gas and primary environmental impact media (groundwater, surface water, and air). Design characteristics for individual waste areas include the liner type, waste type(s), cap type, and leachate collection system design. The practice of leachate recirculation and active gas collection are also defined for each waste area. Climatic data via mean temperature, precipitation, and geographic location (latitude and longitude) are defined at the facility level. Demonstration of the program’s capabilities to the technical community is intended to inspire collaborative efforts regarding potential uses of ALIAS with the prospect of influencing operational practices and effecting regulatory change.

APPLYING US EPA OTHER TEST METHOD 10 WITH OPEN-PATH TUNABLE DIODE LASER ABSORPTION SPECTROSCOPY FOR MEASURING TOTAL METHANE EMISSIONS IN A LANDFILL

Optical Remote Sensing (ORS) is a powerful technique for measuring air contaminant emissions from fugitive area sources. Under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Defense’s (DoD) Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a Radial Plume Mapping (RPM) methodology to directly characterize gaseous emissions from area sources has been demonstrated and validated, and a protocol has been developed and peer reviewed. This EPA “Other Test Method” was made available for use on the EPA website in July 2006. The RPM-based methodologies use ORS techniques to collect path-integrated concentration (PIC) data from multiple beam paths in a plane and combine these with optimization algorithms to map the field of concentration across the plume of contaminant. This test method currently describes two methodologies that can be applied for landfill emission characteriztion. The methodologies are independent of the particular path-integrated ORS system used to generate the PIC data.

CALIBRATED WASTE SETTLEMENT PREDICTION DATA FROM NUMERICAL MODELLING OF WASTE PROCESSES AT SOME UK LANDFILL SITES

The development of a reliable numerical method to predict post-capping waste settlement with time by modelling waste degradation processes and the application of the model to a number of landfills are described in Thomas and Cooke (2007). Key points of that paper are summarised below. This paper provides greater detail of calibrated post-capping settlement predictions where several phases of landfilling have been modelled on a single site. The data are used to illustrate discussions of settlement prediction, calibration, biodegradability of waste types, landfilling approaches and formulation of revised post-settlement profiles to ensure planned post-settlement profiles will be achieved; thereby expanding conclusions drawn in Thomas and Cooke (2007). Possible future changes in the nature of wastes which will be landfilled in UK are discussed briefly.

Die Abfallgebühren für einen durchschnittlichen 4-Personen-Haushalt wurden auf Basis der aktuellen Gebührensatzungen ermittelt. In Bayern wurden dabei erstmals die Abfallgebühren aller öffentlich-rechtlichen Entsorgungsträger aus 86 Landkreisen und kreisfreien Städten erfasst.
